Herbst appliances are actually quite similar to another popular weight loss surgery called the gastric band. In both cases, surgeons will use your stomach as they see fit, to create an opening that restricts the amount of food you can consume at one time. In the Herbst appliance, surgeons place two bands around your stomach—one above and one below your stomach’s entry into your small intestine—to restrict food intake by up to 90%. Whereas in the gastric band, they place an inflatable silicone band around the top of your stomach to achieve the same restriction and control food intake that way.
What To Expect With A Herbst Device?
With all that being said, there are certain things you should expect after surgery. For example, some discomfort will be experienced right after your surgery. Depending on which procedure was performed, you may experience pain in your back or stomach as well as breast tenderness. These side effects will subside quickly and are nothing to worry about. You may have trouble sleeping or heavy lifting due to soreness and fatigue but these side effects also subside quickly. If these symptoms do not subside by week 2 or 3 of recovery, it’s important to let your surgeon know right away so they can treat any potential complications immediately.

The Herbst Appliance is used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). GERD occurs when acid from your stomach backs up into your esophagus, causing heartburn. The pressure that builds up in your abdomen when you stand or sit can sometimes force food and acid back up into your esophagus, causing what we call heartburn. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved two types of surgery for long-term treatment of GERD: Nissen fundoplication, which tightens your lower esophageal sphincter (the muscle that keeps stomach acid from backing up into your esophagus), and Lap-Band surgery to reduce the amount of food you can eat.
But before having either type of surgery, many people choose to try an alternative treatment called an Herbst or Zenker procedure. This procedure involves placing a band around your upper stomach and tightening it with wires so that it pulls down on your lower esophageal sphincter. By pulling down on your lower esophageal sphincter, it helps keep acid from coming back up into your esophagus. Although there are risks associated with all surgeries, complications after an Herbst procedure are rare if performed by experienced surgeons using current techniques. If you’re considering whether to have an operation for GERD, talk with your doctor about whether an alternative treatment like an Herbst procedure might be right for you. It may offer relief without major surgery.
Gastric Bypass Surgery
The following are common questions asked about gastric bypass surgery. Gastric bypass surgery is also known as Roux-en-Y gastric bypass or RYGBP. It’s a surgical procedure that creates smaller stomach pouch and makes your small intestine shorter, both of which help you feel full sooner than normal after eating. It may cause changes in how quickly food moves through your digestive system and give you diarrhea at first, but most people regain normal bowel function within six months after gastric bypass surgery.. Do I Have To Clean The Herbst Appliance?
No, because that’s done by your surgeon during your initial appointment. However, it does require daily maintenance to ensure you heal properly; otherwise, you could damage your gums and make recovery more difficult than it needs to be. Your herbst device is removable for daily cleaning and reinsertion by simply rinsing under warm water or chewing sugar-free gum for about 20 minutes to stimulate saliva production. If you can’t bite down on gum, use a toothbrush or a piece of gauze wrapped around your finger to clean out food particles from between your teeth.
And don’t forget: flossing while wearing an herbst device is essential—you have no other way of getting food particles out of between the wires! To help with dexterity, ask your dentist if you can get a wire cutter made specifically for removing herbst devices so you won’t struggle with cutting them off yourself. It’ll save time and hassle in the long run. Make sure you replace your herbst device as soon as possible after taking it out.
The longer you wait, the higher risk there is of permanent damage due to plaque buildup and dry mouth. If you can’t put it back in right away, try not to leave it out for more than four hours at a time before replacing it. Leaving an empty space too long will lead to gaps forming between your teeth that may never fully close again once filled by new bone growth, leading to permanent spacing issues.

A general rule of thumb is that if any pain or discomfort develops when wearing your herbst device, take it out immediately until healed enough to put back in comfortably without causing pain or discomfort. When using an herbst device, avoid sticky foods like caramel candies and chewy foods like jerky sticks. Also avoid eating ice cream or anything frozen because they might freeze to your device instead of melting, making removal even harder. Remember: You’re responsible for keeping track of your herbst appliance (and its removal) every day, but it takes only five minutes per day to do so. With proper care and attention, you should be able to wear one easily for up to six months following surgery!
If you’re thinking about getting an Herbst appliance but aren’t sure if it will hurt, ask yourself these questions. Do I mind wearing something for 9-12 months? Do I mind going back to my orthodontist every few weeks for adjustments? Am I willing to make sacrifices now so I can enjoy straighter teeth later on down the road?
If not, there are other options available. Orthodontists use many different types of braces and retainers today that don’t require as much time in between appointments. These include clear aligners and Invisalign (which are clear aligners that have been customized by your orthodontist). You’ll have fewer visits overall with these options—sometimes just one or two a year. But they won’t straighten your teeth quite as quickly as an Herbst appliance. Still, they’re less intrusive than traditional braces and may be more comfortable overall. That’s why most people choose them over Herbst appliances when given a choice.
Does Getting A Herbst Appliance Hurt?
The process of getting your teeth straightened, or Herbst (as it’s called by orthodontists), is usually done in two stages. In stage one, brackets are put on your teeth and you wear them for about nine months to a year. Next, in stage two, you go back to the orthodontist for around six months. So he can tighten up any remaining areas that need adjusting before he takes off your braces.
It doesn’t hurt when you get them on—you just have to be careful not to knock them against anything. Most people say there’s no pain whatsoever during stage two either; only some soreness from having bands tightened around their jaws. Even though it doesn’t hurt, you will have to deal with some side effects like temporary jaw aches and headaches. This is because Herbst appliances apply pressure to certain nerves in your face as they move your teeth into place.
