When you’re trying to decide what airline to choose. United Airlines can be a tempting option because it’s so popular and well-known. For pet owners has some glaring flaws that should be consider before you sign up with them to fly your cat or dog. In this post, we’ll look at the good, the bad, and the ugly of United Airlines pet policy to help you make the best decision for you and your four-legged friend.
We are more than happy to accommodate you and your pet
So what if your pet meets one of these criteria? On board flights within North America , United Airlines flights will provide a kennel for pets that do not meet any of these requirements (except for service animals). On international flights, pets that do not meet any of these requirements must be transport in an International Air Transport Association (IATA) approve shipping container with all shipping documents and proper labeling to expedite arrival at its destination. Understanding our policy can help make travel with your pet easier
As we begin 2017 with a fresh start, so do our policies on pets. United Air Flights will allow four animals to travel in-cabin on domestic flights. Cats and dogs that weigh up to 15 pounds (e.g., your pet rabbit is allowed as well), can fit comfortably in a carrier that’s 20x13x9 inches (or larger depending on breed), are at least 8 weeks old, are current on their vaccinations. They have an identification tag or microchip implant. During travel in air cargo under climate controll conditions, your dog or cat can be one of two breeds of no more than 18 months old – it must also weigh less than 40 pounds with a length of 12 inches or less for its height.
We don’t allow pets in Business Class on most international flights
It’s true that United flights allows dogs in Economy class on international flights. But if you want to fly your pup in Business Class (even on an international flight), you’re out of luck. Even if you’re traveling with a dog or cat that fits entirely under your seat or in an overhead bin, we still don’t allow pets in Business Class. The reasoning behind our policy is simple: It comes down to taking care of our employees.
Pets aren’t allowed in the cabin on any flight less than 12 hours
According to United airlines website, No pets can travel in cabins on domestic flights less than 12 hours or international flights less than 24 hours. In fact, some are calling for a boycott of United customer support after a dog died in an overhead bin last week. Several have claimed that similar incidents have occurred with United before without much punishment. Others claim that it is not entirely United fault since these animals should never be put in those bins to begin with. Regardless of whose fault it may be or whether a boycott is justified or not, it is still upsetting to see pets treated so poorly by airlines. Hopefully United learns from its mistakes and is more responsible next time around.
Transporting a pet as cargo does not guarantee that it will arrive at its destination on the same aircraft as its owner.
For animals traveling in cargo, a passenger may request that his or her pet be carried on an earlier or later flight on United Airlines flights provided it is scheduled to be transported as cargo on that flight. If a flight has been delayed at origin or en route so that connections cannot be maintained with another flight operated by United Airlines between two points over which United has no control (e.g., weather), pets may not be accepted for transportation as checked baggage on any subsequent flights.
These restrictions apply even if carrying-on space is available after an earlier connecting United flight has departed without its pet cargo onboard. Pets will not be accepted for travel if they are dead upon arrival at destination; have not had food or water within four hours of being loaded onto an aircraft; have not been properly contained in a ventilated container; or are more than six months old. No pet weighing more than 85 pounds can be transported via United Airlines. Additional fees apply for pets booked to fly in cabins (as carry-on bags) rather than as cargo and range from $125 to $200 each way depending on weight and distance traveled.

All service animals must be pre-approve.
United Airlines is proud to support those with disabilities. They allow service animals in cabin free of charge under their policy; all service animals must be pre-approve by United prior to travel at least 48 hours in advance. A Service Animal Reception Desk (SARD) representative will discuss what documentation is require to support a qualifying need. Failure to provide documentation or refusal. To be fully cooperative during questioning at check-in or airport authorities may result in your animal being denied boarding.

There’s not a ton of wiggle room in any pet policy. And I don’t see United Airlines making an exception for customers who are looking to bring along some non-standard animals. This doesn’t mean you can’t bring your dog with you; it just means that it needs to be able to fit properly into an approved container during transit. And like many airlines, United flight will assume your pet is already train. You’ll be responsible for cleaning up after it during your trip.
