The Church Cleaning Checklist: How to Keep Your Place of Worship Clean

Keeping your house of worship clean is extremely important for several reasons. For one, it keeps your parishioners healthy by keeping bacteria and germs at bay. Secondly, it preserves your church’s building. And lastly, it makes your sanctuary a space that honors God in every way.

While it’s safe to say that keeping your church clean is important, it can be tough to know where to start. Luckily, we’ve put together a church cleaning checklist to help you. With this easy-to-follow list, you’ll be able to keep the whole building clean for each of your church services.

1. The Lobby and Church Entrance

The first place to start on your church cleaning checklist is with the entrance areas. You’ll need to sweep the exterior entrance and vacuum all floors, rugs, and carpeting. Make sure to dust off all the surfaces in the lobby as well.

2. The Nave and the Sanctuary

Now it’s time to move onto the Nave and the Sanctuary. To start, remove the trash from the wastebasket and replace them with new trash bags.

Next, you’ll need to clean and polish all the wooden surfaces in the sanctuary. This includes the pews, altar, and podium. Make sure to dust and clean the glass partition and other furniture, too.

Once the furniture is cleaned, move onto the windows. Wipe them down for dust and to remove dead insects.

3. The Kitchen and Fellowship Hall

Once you’ve finished in the sanctuary and the nave, it’s time to move onto the Fellowship Hall and the kitchen. These areas get used a lot so you need to make sure you clean them well.

Start by sweeping and vacuuming the area. Next, sanitize and thoroughly wipe down all food and coffee areas.

From there, you’ll need to deep clean the oven, stove, microwave, and refrigerators. This can take a lot of work, so bringing in a team like Prestige Janitorial Services can help you properly deep clean these areas.

4. Library and Church Offices

Now you’re ready to move onto the church offices and library. Start by emptying the wastebaskets and dusting the cabinets, shelves, partitions, chairs, and desks.

Then, use glass cleaner to wash all the windows and glass surfaces. You’ll also want to vacuum and sweep the area thoroughly, as dust can easily accumulate in these areas.

Wrap up cleaning this section by recycling old papers. Make sure that all documents and papers that are being used are left untouched.

5. Nursery and Classrooms

To clean the classrooms and the nursery, you need to start by emptying the trash. These can quickly fill up and should be emptied frequently.

Next, wipe down and disinfect all tables, chairs, cribs, and frequently used toys. Make sure to wash any blankets or stuffed animals in the laundry.

Wrap up by thoroughly vacuuming the classrooms and nursery to get rid of dust. If there are windows in the room, wipe these down with glass cleaner.
