The most straightforward cleaning purpose is to insert as many cups as you think you need to leave enough space at the muzzle size of the solvent collector to collect trapped solvent. After cleaning, you can disconnect the solvent trap from the barrel and pour the solvent into another container for recycling or proper disposal.
Straight Cone Cup
- Simple cones cups are way easier. Set your compound rest to whatever angle, turn the knob, done.
- Straight cones are most often sold in 50-degree and 60-degree variants.
- The straight cone solvent trap cup is most effective in medium-fire rifles that shoot high-speed supersonic ammunition, with speeds approaching 2,500 to 3,000 feet per second.
- These are most commonly used in 5.56 NATO, .308 Winchester, .300 Win Mag and similar supersonic .22 and .30 caliber cartridges.
- Experienced solvent trap manufacturers generally agree that a 60-degree cone is best for higher speeds, and a 50-degree cone is better for moderate speeds higher than 1,125 ft/sec but less than 2,500 ft/sec.
Radial Cone Solvent Trap Cups
- The radial cone is an effective “hybrid”, most commonly used for center-fire rifle bullets and subsonic pistol or carbine bullets.
- Many commercial solvent trap manufacturers use baffles with similar radial or curved designs.
- These are most commonly used for guns that can fire supersonic and subsonic ammunition, and are suitable for 300 Blackout and 9mm Parabellum cartridges.
Stepped Cone Solvent Trap Cups
- Stepped (rough) surface = more turbulance
- Stepped cones are often called “Aztec” cones because of their unique stepped shape. According to reports, when used to suppress subsonic or slower supersonic cartridges, these cones produce a lower pitch and overall tone.
- The builder’s theory is that the stepped design of the cone can generate greater turbulence in the airflow. Other feedback said that high-speed ink cartridges will not benefit much from this design, while slower ink cartridges can see a small performance improvement.
- The overall length and angle of a stepped cone is usually similar to that of a straight cone, providing a slope of 50 to 60 degrees.
K Cups
- The K cup or K bezel represents an older design. They are stacked directly on top of each other to provide excellent performance for pistols, pistol bullets and specialized subsonic bullets.
- If you are building a setup for a 9mm pistol, .22 LR or 300 Blackout that only shoots subsonic loads, the K-cup stack is the first choice. These internals may also be the most difficult to machine because they require additional machining in addition to simply drilling through holes and basic clamps, so they may not be suitable for first-time builders or builders who do not have a milling machine or lathe.
Freeze Plug-style Cups
- These “freeze plug”-type cups are the most affordable, arguably the simplest, they’re highly stackable, and they’re versatile. They’re the “OGs” of the form 1 suppressor world and were used long before manufacturers began producing newer styles like the options listed above.
- They can generally be drilled for any caliber up to .308 Winchester and provide mild to good performance for a wide variety of supersonic and subsonic loads. Their performance will be poorer compared to a by-design conical or radial setup. Before different options became available commercially, the freeze plug was the top choice for most Form 1 suppressor builders.
Skirted Cups
- You can find many of the cones listed above with a skirt, or pre-fabricated spacer machined directly into the cone itself. This eliminates the need to buy your own spacers or cut them from raw tubing.
- There are various other types of internals made for form 1 builds, though the options listed above are the most popular and comprise a majority of configurations for most calibers, including both centerfire and rimfire rifles and pistols.
