How To Choose The Right Powder Coating Gun

It’s very important to choose the right powder coating gun for your specific job or applications. Choosing the wrong type of gun for a certain job can make you waste money. The last thing you want to do is buy an expensive powder coating gun that doesn’t meet the requirements of your specific job or applications.

The most important thing you need to consider when choosing a powder coating gun is what type of material you are spraying. If it’s organic, inorganic or titanium based. The last thing you want to do is use an organic powder coating gun on an inorganic material. The result would be a poorly coated part that would need to be re-coated and at your cost.

The first type of powder coating gun we will discuss is the standard airless power coating gun. There are several different types of airless powder guns. Some examples include; siphon feed, gravity feed, side feed, rear bag powder guns. The airless power coating gun is typically used for indoor applications that require higher viscosity materials. The standard airless gun uses a pressure pot which puts out 7-10 lbs of constant pressure. If you are looking to do high volume production then the airless powder coating gun would be your best bet.

The next type of powder coating gun is the dual action gun. This type of gun uses an internal air compressor to atomize the material while simultaneously baking it onto the part. There are two types; rotary and oscillating guns. A rotary gun typically has a much finer finish than an oscillating gun when applied to inorganic materials. If you are spraying organic materials either high or low bake then an oscillating dual action gun would be your best bet. The next type of powder coating gun is the pneumatic nail gun.

This type of powder coating gun uses a very high pressure to push the material through into the part that’s being coated. There are two different types of pneumatic nail guns. The belt feed or the siphon feed. If you are looking to do high volume production then the belt-feed would be your best bet because it has a greater powder capacity. The next type of powder coating gun is the air assisted airless power coating gun.

This type of powder coating gun uses an internal compressor to atomize the material while simultaneously baking it onto the part. There are two types of air assisted powder guns, straight stream and round stream. A straight stream gun typically has a much finer finish than a round stream when applied to inorganic materials. If you are spraying organic materials either high or low bake then a round stream gun would be your best bet.

The last type of powder coating gun is the airless rotary power spray gun. There are several different types of airless rotary powder guns, close ended and open ended. A close-ended gun uses a needle valve on the tip to control material flow which means it can be used with a pressure pot. An open-ended gun uses a lot of material to atomize which means it produces a very high volume without the need for a pressure pot. This type of powder coating gun is typically used when you want to cover large areas in a short amount of time.

This should give you a good idea on what types of guns are available and how to choose the right powder coating gun for you.
