Admission Criteria of Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine

Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine, situated in northeast and northwest Pennsylvania, is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing a high-quality healthcare system to the residents of Geisinger, Lackawanna County. The Commission accredits this school on International and Transregional Accreditation of Health Education Schools. The Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine strives to maintain a high-quality, patient-centered, educational environment that promotes the education of health care professionals, nurses, and doctors in all areas of nursing.

Students who complete the Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine’s undergraduate degree are eligible to enroll in the Master of Science program. The curriculum and the student’s coursework vary with each campus. At the Master’s level, students pursue the advanced clinical practice, critical thinking skills, policy analysis, health communication, and leadership skills. The curriculum requires students to complete a minimum of sixty credit hours at the Geisinger campuses.

Geisinger Commonwealth School offer affiliate Teaching Program:

Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine offers students the chance to expand their professional horizons through participation in the school’s Affiliate Teaching Program. This program allows students to develop clinical and leadership skills while preparing themselves for the demanding demands of a Master’s degree program. Students also have the opportunity to choose electives from a variety of subjects that range from anatomy and physiology to human growth and development. Geisinger provides its students with a wide range of clinical rotations in which students can participate in primary and secondary care, surgery, pediatrics, family practice, health services, public health, and preventive medicine. The school has branches in Lackaween and Springfield and offers its students the opportunity to earn a two-year Associate’s degree in Family Practice.

Geisinger Veterans Affiliated Hospital:

Students who enter the Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine are given an on-campus clinic where they can receive general care and be treated quickly. There are nine surgical centers on campus, including the Geisinger Veterans Affiliated Hospital and the Geisinger Breast Care Center. The undergraduate school consists of about 2,000 students who are attending classes in areas of Medicine, all related to pediatrics, geriatrics, neonatology, obstetrics/maternity, women’s health, psychology, biochemistry, biology, and nutritional science. These schools have received accreditation from the American School of Surgery and the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Schools.

Online medical lecture option:

Geisinger offers its students the option of taking classes online. Students interested in online learning will need to complete the associate’s degree program. After students earn their associate degree, they may take general education courses in order to fulfill their associate degree requirements. Geisinger provides its students with over forty credit hours of online coursework that includes core courses in neuroanatomy, physical therapy, pathology, diagnostic procedures, medical ethics, medical terminology, pharmacy, statistics, computer sciences, and anatomy. The clinical training portion of the Geisinger program requires students to complete internships in several hospitals within the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Programs at Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine: 

The Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine also offers two certificate programs. The first certificate program is for students who want to become teachers. Students in this program will be able to work with students who already have a bachelor’s degree and teach at junior and senior high schools. The second certificate program is for students who are interested in becoming nurses. Students who enter into this program will learn the basics of nursing before they can take the NCLEX-RN exam and become Registered Nurse. This program is especially useful for students who want to start a career as soon as possible but are unsure of their area of nursing or whether they will enjoy it.

Different special activities at Geisinger commonwealth school:

At the Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine, students participate in electives, seminars, workshops, and special activities. These activities help students develop leadership skills, problem-solving abilities, teamwork skills, and self-management. The school also provides students with a network of fellow students who may help during their course of studies. Students who want to participate in pre-medical programs such as the program, however, must register separately. Students who are enrolled in other programs such as the International Student Study Program are not allowed to register in the pre-medical program at Geisinger. Pre-medical programs are more common among distance education students, and therefore many do not register in these programs at Geisinger.
