4 Common Product Manager Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

We live in a consumer world; whenever there is something new and exciting coming out, most people have to have it. So whether you want to get the newest sneakers or the newest game console, one person is responsible for this in every company.

This person is what we call a product manager. They are responsible for product development, and they usually are the main person behind a product.

However,  even they make mistakes on designs for products. If you want to be a Product Manager, you should avoid four product manager mistakes to ensure a successful career for yourself.

1. Mistaking Glitter for Gold

When becoming a product manager and learning product manager skills, you are the eyes of the operation. Therefore, you have to identify the good and bad qualities of a product, and sometimes these can be difficult to identify.

It will take some practice, but you will have to be able to differentiate these so that you do not mistake things that glitter for gold in the products you must promote.

2. Being a Perfectionist

When implementing your product manager strategy, you don’t need to be a perfectionist. You may be an artist, but you need to be a businessman too.

Products fresh off the line will never be perfect, even with positive tests and trials. So it’s okay if they fail initially. However, the reality is that only about five percent of new products succeed in the market.

So even if it does fail, you can use this as a foundation for a better product moving forward.

3. Mistaking Excessive Features for Benefits

If it fails initially, that’s not an excuse to slap a whole bunch of useless bells and whistles on it just for the sake of doing it. New product features don’t equal success.

Excessive features on products tend to confuse and frustrate consumers because that means more instructions they have to learn to work the product. Just because a product has many features, that doesn’t mean that these are beneficial to the product being successful.

As a product manager, you should be able to learn the balance between superficiality and practicality.

4. Focusing Only on the Product and Not the User

When in product management, you have to make sure that the product is made for the user, not the other way around.

The consumer should always come first, and they should remain that way throughout the product trial process. Don’t make the product overly difficult to use.

As the product manager, you should make sure that the designs for products are consumer-friendly. After all, the product won’t be using itself; it’ll be the consumer who has to buy and use it.

Avoid Product Manager Mistakes

When dealing with the creation of successful products, it’s hard to avoid product manager mistakes. But don’t worry, those will happen sometimes. As long as you learn from these mistakes, then your success will happen in time.

The things we use every day go through a long process to get to our homes, and it’s all thanks to product managers and their teams.
